Saving energy?

So, the other day I saw on a TV newscast something about the Christmas tree in new york city being equipped with 'energy saving led light bulbs'. Personally, I thought the idea was ridiculous. I figured, if the interest was really in saving energy, why light up 5miles of lights on a wire wrapped around a tree to begin with?.. According to this web article, the led lights will be powered by solar panels. Theoretically, the energy being generated from those panels could be used elsewhere, I suppose its a good advertisement for green technology in the long-run. The interesting part of the article talks about the implementation of 'the green roof' which is desert plantings on the rooftops to reduce waste water run offs and to act as an insulator for the building. It'd be interesting to see if a green roof trend were to take off in California.
