Granny, 107, takes web by storm

AT 107 she is probably the world's older blogger and cyber granny Olive Riley may also lay claim to being the oldest YouTube user.

From her home on the Central Coast, the great-grandmother of seven files her The Life of Riley blog (or blob as she calls it), which has won her thousands of fans across the world.

Mrs Riley was born in 1899 in Broken Hill when Australia as a federation did not exist and NSW was still a British colony ruled by Queen Victoria.

She survived two World Wars and the Great Depression, witnessed the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, raised three children and worked any number of weird and wonderful jobs, including as an egg sorter and a station cook in western Queensland.

She is full of stories, not all of which have made the blog yet, like the time she punched a schoolmate who was teasing her about her then surname of Dangerfield.

And the time she accidentally got a station worker sacked because he was watching her through a spy glass when she, her daughter and the boss's daughter were skinny-dipping in the dam.

"All of it happened," Mrs Riley said.

"(My adventures) started even from when I was at school - lively things would happen.

"When I had the children I got a bit possessive and I wouldn't let them out of my sight. I used to take them everywhere with me - even on my jobs.

"I've got three children, umpteen grand children. I've got a lot of them and they're all nice, every one of them, and seven great grandchildren."

Mrs Riley is the first to admit she's no computer geek; in fact, she says she doesn't understand them at all.

Friend and film maker Mike Rubbo came to her with the idea of doing the blog and she relies on him and another friend from her nursing home to help her post her blogs.

"I've got no ideas about computers, no idea at all," she said.

"But Mike and that other man do and I tell them my stories and they put them on the computer.

"It's a bit of fun, although I do get a bit tired sometimes."

She is stunned by the number of people who read her blog but is thrilled by the "thousands of new friends from all over the world" that she has made.

"I thought I might have a few (readers) but I didn't think I'd have so many - but they all seem to be so happy about it," she said.

"Mike asked me for little things that I remember, and I know that the people will like them because they're not rude or stupid or anything.

"I'm sure they do enjoy them because of the replies I get. I get some real good replies. I've made a lot of friends by doing the blogs - thousands."

Mrs Riley, who will turn 108 in October, would have to be the world's oldest YouTuber as well.

She is the star of the YouTube film Olive Riley Returns to Broken Hill.

It's a short film made up of clips taken from a one-hour documentary on her called All About Olive which aired on ABC television last year.

Thousands of internet users have clicked on the YouTube site to hear her outback adventures.

Diapers No More!

So this blog thing...It's everywhere. I was reading my local paper as I do everyday and I read an article “Senator mired in bathroom incident denies guilt.” I read the article describing an embracing and perplexing situation for Sen. Larry Craig regarding an alleged bathroom sexual rendezvous. The last sentence reads, “Mike Rogers, who bills himself as a gay activist blogger, published the allegations on his Web site, www.blogactive.com, in October 2006.

Then as I read the local section and the letters to the editors I noticed a column devoted to blogging. I’ve read the column before but I never knew it was from my paper’s blogging site. Apparently local citizens comment on past and current articles online in a blogging form and the paper reproduces those blogs in the actual newspaper itself.

Blogging is still so new to me. Even my Microsoft XP Edition 2003 keeps underlining the words “blogging,” “blogs,” and “blog” in red. Microsoft’s confused and so am I. What a conundrum.

But I am enjoying the jump off into a blogging jetliner.

I wanted to blog with all of you today regarding another article I read in my paper. The paper I read is a sister publication of the North County Times. The article was “Diaper-free movement draws skepticism.” I read the article and became excited.

I became excited because anyway to reduce, reuse, and recycle the planet makes me happy and gleeful. If mother’s and father’s across the US adapted this new trend then the landfills would be filled with that much less diapers. Also individuals or families could utilize the savings from not purchasing diapers for other items in the economy. As humans we must always look for ways to be more efficient. Efficiency is key to a healthier planet, both physically and mentally.

Diaper companies would have to restructure. Most diaper companies are controlled or owned by larger companies. For example, Pampers the diaper brand is owned by Proctor and Gamble. These companies are typically massive and can utilize the reduction of diaper sales to develop other products or focus on their current products.

In the end the human baby becomes more independent with having to learn how to utilize a conventional toilet at a faster rate.

Although I wish a massive grass roots movement would take off and within five years individuals and parents would not be using diapers if possible. Most likely only a few parents will decide to make a statement and have diaper free babies.

I guess I’ll stop wearing my diaper...LOL

Breaking News: All Online Data Lost After Internet Crash

I love The Onion "news service" They are so funny!

Bluray&Hddvd: Porn/Sex may decide new format.

Just like the old VHS/Beta war, Porn and Sex played a major role for VHS victory. The tides have come again for the new multinedia format war: Blu-ray and Hd-Dvd. Currently US has hddvd leading the video war but Sony's Blu-ray, in the form of PS3s, sits in an equal if not larger amount of houses both in and out of United States. Also hddvd has already been on the market for adult video producers, on the other hand, Sony's rightheous corporate values prevent them from dealing with porn producers.
Now Blu-ray has opened the doors to a more friendly approach to dealing with blu ray and the adult film making industry. As a result, a major blow may be in the works setting the path to a new standard and format ruler. Here is a link for a more detailed looked on this technology and the affects of adult film.

Interesting Blog Entry

This is a story covered by TechNewsWorld, about a blogger for the New York Times named Steven D. Levitt. Yes the New York Times apparently has bloggers. But the interesting thing is that it is a really interesting topic and hot for debate. He asked the question "If you were a terrorist how would you attack?" the blog had about 600 responses by the end of the first day both ranging from ideas on what individuals would do to severelly ridiculing him for his idea. The Article end with asking "could Levitt's blog create a seed of a bad deed?" The article also includes a link to Levitts original blog

here is the link http://www.technewsworld.com/story/58752.html

Blogosphere Conduct

http://crofsblogs.typepad.com/ckbetas/2007/04/good_manners_on.html

The link is to an article that refers to the limitless web environment which opens the need to design a blogger code for blogosphere conduct. Some recommendations for the code is that bloggers ban anonymous messages and have the freedom to delete rude, "threatening, and libelous comments."
I think for a blogger code to be developed and legally enforced it would require several difficult steps. First a consensus would have to be reached on what is civil behavior online. Then user agreements would have to be carefully and thoroughly written and then uploaded for users to accept them to be authorized to participate in a blog. Without a proper user agreement blogsites would risk lawsuits for censorship for deleting entries.
Though a difficult task, I certainly would not mind that a bit of civility and politeness be expected when participating in professional, educational, and non for profit blogsites.

Are you Superbad?

One of the big movies hits this summer has to be the movie Superbad. It's a fun loving story about three high school seniors enjoying their last few days at school. In it's 10 days in theaters Superbad has raked in 68.6 million, which also helped contribute to the highest overall summer ticket sales ever. This total is estimated to be over $4 billion dollars, a first for any summer movie season.
Such a money maker of a movie was written by two friends, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Either these two gentlemen are comic masterminds, or they probably wrote about something they know or have experienced; I like to believe it was the latter of the two. This leaves me to wonder why more people don't write scripts about life experiences. Have you ever been watching a movie and wonder how the hell it ever was given a green light to be made. Sitting there bored out of your mind, thinking you could make something better. I say we should all try to write down a little of life's experiences and sell them to a studio. Even if it doesn't get picked up, you still helped contribute to making something meaningful to the movie industry. If it does get picked up you might help keep lame boring films like "Life Aquatic" out of theaters, and you might make a little cash in the process. Your odds would probably be better then winning the lottery too.

Boston Red Sox Nation

I found this article, http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070827&content_id=2173148&vkey=news_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos.

It talks about the upcoming series of the Red Sox vs. the Yankees. It's very well known that the Red Sox and the Yankees hate each other and no matter where the standings are it's always an intense time. Red Sox are in the lead right now by 7 games with the Yankees following behind.

The Boston Red Sox are well known for their "curse" and their triumphant victory in 2004 world series. The cheesy, but very lovable movie Fever Pitch, explained the curse, the crazy (some may say obsessed) fans, and the pure love of the game. It also stressed the intense hatred for the Yankees.
Thought it was interesting and wanted to share it with everyone.

Go Sox!!

Blog Addiction

I found this interesting/sad read on blog addiction: http://middlewesterner.typepad.com/middlewesterner/2005/02/the_blogging_ad_1.html

This pathetic disease has seemed to have claimed ordinary people out of their otherwise fascinating lives...or so they'd like to think. The apparent blog addict would rather blog than spend time with one's family, participate in social activities and even sleep. Can you believe that they even compare blogging to rank up next to the pleasure of recreational SEX??? No no no...I don't buy it for one second!!! It's not that these people have soooo poorly succumb to the black hole that is the Internet...it's that they had nothing (or no one) better to do in the first place.

Skip right past those supposed 3-steps to recovery, turn your PC off and find a REAL HOBBY!

Beat Me Down Censorship

Freedom of speech is still not a right for everybody . Look at the guys face in the article below. Thats what happens to you when you speak your mind(no pun intended.) People from Malayasia and Singapore have this right taken away through physical abuse... Yet information providers and bloggers still cannot be muzzled by this physical threat. Here is the link to the relalted topic:

Funniest Moment at CSUSM, please post :)

I want everyone to post the most hilarious moment they have encountered while at CSUSM. Here is mine. Brace yourself.

I took Oral Communications my first or second semester here at CSUSM. We had an older professor. She didn't seem like she could really control the class. Considering the class was full of freshmen and took place around noon the class was really wound up every day. One specific day the teacher was having especially a difficult time keeping the class quiet. She wanted us to form groups of four and we did. Then she instructed us to…

Brace yourself…

She said, “Grab your dicks…” and her face went pale white. She had clearly meant to say “Grab your desks.”

The class was silent…at first. Then…a cloud of laughter broke and thunder rumbled the classroom. Drops of tears appeared on the students faces as they couldn’t control their laughter.

She then walked over to me and whispered in my ear, “You make me nervous.” She then walked away. I quickly stopped laughing and looked around to see if anyone saw her approach me or heard or saw her whisper in my ear. I didn’t know what to do. She transferred out the following class and we had a new professor. I guess this was the most funniest and awkward encounter I have had so far at CSUSM. I’ve never seen her on this campus after…I wonder what happened to her after that eventful day?

Blacker than the blackest black, times infinity.

Here is an interesting little piece of ultimate mayhem:

For all you die-hard Dethklok fans, This may be the beginning of the metalocalypse. Just remember, this album may be intended for fish only. ROCK ON!

Blogging goes mainstream

CNN.com - Blogging goes mainstream - Mar. 10, 2003.

Once considered a passing trend, blogging is becoming one of the new fastest growing internet phenomenons. It is still used by a small percentage of passionate underground users but is quickely becoming more mainstream. The trick to its success will be figuring out how to package it.

It's growing success is largely due to its inexpensive, easy nature. It is designed in such a way that most anyone is able to create an outlet which allows them to express their viewpoint on any topic imaginable. This means that anyone from developing teenagers wishing to discuss current trends in fasion or their latest piercing, to business professionals wanting to exchange corporate stories are using blogs as their tool of choice.

The growth of bloggings popularity means potential dollars for advertisers. Since specific blogs usually attract a specific demographic of users, it becomes easy for advertisers to target their potential clients in the correct blog.

Blah, Blah, Blah, and Blog

I read an article on Wired's website about how blogging is and was way more popular before and after the dot.com boom. It continues to talk about how some bloggers are fake wannabe writers and some don't have a life that all they do is talk about their day, what they ate, or who they saw. Blogging is basically like expressing your thought whether it is on politics, news, or even just your personal life. It cannot be limited to just this or just that, but some feel that bloggers are just wasting other people's time.

Sure, say if I blogged about getting a kick-ass meal at Chick-Fil-A, the majority of you guys wouldn't care. But if a movie or music star posted their meals, then his/her page would get a lot of hits. Blogging is somewhat like a Myspace or Live Journal site - you need to get popular in order to be popular. Some express their views in a very artistic way, but most post blah. But with experience and the right connections, they too can gain that popularity.

I believe that this technique is one way to vent. Even though I don't really care about it (because I vent from talking to friends), I do believe it's a way to take out stress or anger in life. What I do feel is that they are wasting their time for blogging. Maybe they should try getting a girlfriend/boyfriend. So, my conclusion is that blogging produces BLAH!

Here's the site where I got the article from: http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/news/2002/02/50443

Name Dicrimination?!?

http://www.thedigeratilife.com/blog/index.php/2007/07/02/name-discrimination-how-it-affects-job-and-career-choices-life-status-overall-success/

The other day I was discussing with my fiance on what to name our future kids (just one of those random conversations we would have every so often) and we came up with a list of names, enough for two girls and two boys. Well, while in class having to give this whole blogging thing a try, I came across an article about name discrimination! I am like....um....serious?! This article was so intriguing to me that I had to share this with you all. I totally understand that our names can give others a better sense of understanding of who we are, where we came from, and things such of that nature, but for it to possibly affect my chances of getting a job is ridiculous! This makes me wonder if all those jobs I applied for and did not hear from them had anything to do with my name (my name is NOT very common). I mean, certain names indicate a characteristic or a trait or even status. Your name can be categorized as sounding "white" or sounding "black". Wow! So fellow blogger, think twice when naming your little ones cause you would not people to think your son is a jerk just because you named him "Ace" according to the article.

Drug (HGH & Steriods) allegations against Tim Couch

Of course this guys needs to take steriods to play in the NFL, he was the #1 Draft Choice in 1999 and is a total bust...can you blame him, he had to do something. Playing quarterback is the only thing this bonehead has ever known how to do. He was probably managing a 420 Pot Shop back home telling his buddy Stoney, "You know, if I took a bunch of performance enhancing drugs, I could probably play in the NFL again and make a s#%* load more money then I am working here with you at this pot shop." Stoney probably agreed with him, and then Tim Couch probably proceeded to ask him, "Stoney, you think I could throw this football over them mountains right there...yeah, I bet I could...". Anyway, the point is, is this guy was supposed to be the next Joe Montana at one time in his life, and now he's been out of football for the last 3 years. This is probably the only thing he does well, like Barry Bonds, so he apparently is trying everything he can, at any cost, to get back in the game. I don't know, can you blame the guy?

Video Blogger targeted by Federal Authorities

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1222780,00.html

This article is about a video blogger named Josh Wolf, because he caught on film some G8 protesters being subject of police brutality and sold to local tv stations. He refuses to show the rest of the video to the Court in order to protect the protesters identities.

Moblogging

Back in 2003, Mark Glaser of the New York Times wrote a short piece in regards to moblogging stating that it would be the 'Next big thing... in 2015'. His article described a moblog service that had announced its offering aimed at cellphone users.

It's interesting to see that technology has advanced as such a rate since 2003. The stated date of 2015 is actually an overestimate as a flurry of mobile phones and smart phones are being offered by most cellular phone manufacturers. Phones such as the Nokia N93, and N95 are equipped specially for capturing and sending video clips. I recall seeing news coverage in regards to increased mobile blogging among the travelling community. That news cast aired sometime last year, so it is safe to assume people have begun blogging using their mobile devices.

As interest increases in moblogging, or as people begin to have access to phones that have this capacity, we may see more amateur blogs popping up with candid news coverage or even coverage of events that new stations will not broadcast. [i.e. The mobile phone video of Saddam Husssein's execution.]

There is an obvious cause for concern in regards to the material that may be posted, but I think that moblogging will offer lots of interesting insights and offer us as close to live coverage of news and events as possible. News stations may decide to equip their anchors with moblogging capable devices to secure news stories on the fly. Maybe one day technology will make the cameraman obsolete?

Bloggers Face Jail Time

I found this article, http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=5&objectid=10457853, which talks about two Dutch news bloggers who could face up to two-months in jail. They were caught filming under women's skirts in their attempt to blog a "warning" to the public of the concern of a transparent ceiling in their town.

Is their reason of filming inappropriately truly credible? Or better yet, who decided to allow a transparent ceiling in the first place!? Which is exactly their point of getting this issue resolved but at the same time at their own expense of possible jail time due to poor judgement of their actions. To those who are aware of this see-through structure, why wear a skirt or dress? Free show-but-no-tell? J/K.

Maybe those guys really did have good intentions in attempting to cover that story for their news blog. However, I think they should have approached the matter differently like interviewing the people in that town first to see how they feel and then ask permission to be filmed. Yet, I don't think the filming would be necessary because it's common sense to know what is expected to happen if women wearing skirts/dresses were to walk onto a transparent ceiling and the people's eyes underneathe would capture.

Business Blogging on the Rise

Blogs have become a popular tool for small businesses, which see them as an easy and inexpensive marketing tool and as a way to differentiate themselves from their competitors,. According to Anita Campbell, editor of the blog Small Business Trends, blogs are tailored made for small businesses and a better tool for them then they are for large businesses. She states that large businesses have to worry about what they can say in blogs because of SEC regulations and their different constituents. Blogs can also be used for small business to tell their story and make contacts.

An important aspect in business is creating a relationship with your customer and understanding their needs. I think blogs are an excellent way for small businesses to connect with their customers on a more informal and personal level. Blogs can be used to recieve feedback from customers or to inform customers about new products or trends in the company.

North American Union

http://raykania.com/serendipity/index.php?/archives/22-NEW-HOUSE-BILL-AIDS-NORTH-AMERICAN-UNION.html

The two countries that border the continental US, and our government (House, Senate, President) are working together to form a North American Union to compete with China and the European Union.

Just like in the EU, we will be giving up our governing sovereignty to courts we must follow. In the bill in the house H.R. 1645 it talked about creating borders in southern Mexico. Further information on the proposed project will bring in a new currency called the Amero. Our borders will not be closed, and this is not hitting the main stream media. Further searches for "NAFTA Super Highway, Amero" will help.

The impact on me will be the new currency and influx of people from the south competing for manufacturing and other services. Also maybe Mexico will open up its natural resources and laws for non residents to own property and land. Unions will lose their grip on heath care, and higher wages will even-out through the continent.
